Why do we use fabric milled from recycled plastic bottles?
Because we firmly believe that you don’t have to destroy the environment in order to enjoy it. Skiing and Snowboarding need cold winters and deep snowfall, and we want to be part of the solution, not just another contributor to the problem. We truly believe that its our responsibility to preserve this world for future generations.
An average of three recycled bottles are used in each product
50,000 gallons of water are saved by recycling
95% Facility-wide diversion rate, across offices and production
10,000 POUNDS OF SCRAP FABRIC TO BE DIVERTED FROM LANDFILLS IN 2021
Proudly Made with Repreve
Plastic bottles are collected in the USA and instead of ending in landfills, they are processed by Unifi® and made into Repreve® Recycled Fiber. Yarn is milled domestically and knitted into fabric before being transported to Phunkshun Wear.
The Repreve Process
- Plastic bottles are collected domestically, to ensure a smaller transit carbon footprint, and delivered to Repreve® in North Carolina, where they are cleaned and prepped.
- Bottles are then chopped into small pieces called flake, which is then in turn melted and formed into small pellets called chip, to prepare for the extrusion process.
- Chip is melted and extruded to create long pieces of yarn, and wound onto bobbins in preparation of being knitted into fabric
- Many spools of yarn are threaded into a knitting machine, and fabric is knitted to our specifications.
